Caring Career Spotlight: Jenna, Branch Director

For Jenna, caring for others has been the thread connecting every step of her career.

She first joined ɫɫ��Ƶ in 2009 as a Customer Service Representative, where she spent five years supporting patients, internal teams and referral partners. Even in those early days, Jenna saw her role as more than answering calls. She saw it as a way to care for people.

“I loved providing care through customer service to our patients, internal teams and referral sources,” she shared.

From there, her path continued to grow. Jenna stepped into leadership roles, eventually becoming a Branch Director for skilled home health.

Her journey reflects both professional growth and a deep connection to the mission behind the work.

“The ‘why’ behind the work I do is because I love to care for patients, even if it’s not face to face,” Jenna said. “My purpose in life is to help make other people’s lives better in any way that I can.”

That purpose became personal long before her career began. When Jenna first discovered ɫɫ��Ƶ, it was through her own family.

“Elara was caring for my mother at the time I started, and they took such great care of her,” she explained. “I wanted to work for a company that provided that kind of patient experience.”

Today, that same motivation continues to guide her. Jenna points to both her team and the patients they serve as the reason she stays inspired.

“What keeps me motivated is the people I work with and the patients I serve.”

As a leader, Jenna values the culture she’s helped build and the support she feels across the organization. Despite being part of a large, nationwide company, she says ɫɫ��Ƶ maintains a strong sense of connection at every level.

“I love working at Elara because I know we are doing the right things for our patients and our community,” she said. “The culture here is very important, and you truly feel that importance from leadership all the way up to our CEO.”

While her role today focuses on leadership and operations, Jenna still carries with her the moments that shaped her early experience, including one that continues to stand out years later.

“I always go back to one of my first customer service calls,” she said. “It was a widowed woman who called late at night. She just wanted someone to talk to.”

Jenna spent nearly an hour on the phone with her.

“At the end, she was very happy. You could tell she was lonely and just needed someone in that moment,” she said. “Sometimes it’s the small things that make the biggest impact.”

That mindset — that every interaction matters — continues to influence how she leads her team today.

From her first late-night call to her role leading a skilled home health team today, Jenna’s career has been shaped by one simple idea: caring for people, in every moment that matters.

Caring Career Spotlight: Ashlee, Hospice Clinical Coordinator

When families choose hospice care, they’re often navigating one of the most emotional and uncertain times in life. While much of hospice care happens at the bedside, there’s also a dedicated team working behind the scenes to make sure everything comes together smoothly. Ashlee, a hospice clinical coordinator, plays a key role in making that happen.

Ashlee joined ɫɫ��Ƶ in 2021 and has grown significantly within her role.

“My journey has really been about learning how all the moving pieces of hospice care come together,” she explained. “From admission coordination to supporting our clinicians and making sure they have what they need to give the best care possible.”

Over time, Ashlee has taken on additional responsibilities, including training team members and deepening her knowledge of compliance and care standards. But what stands out most to her isn’t just the logistics — it’s the human side of hospice.

“I’ve really grown in understanding the level of compassion this work takes,” she shared. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how what I do behind the scenes actually impacts both our team and the patients we serve.”

Her passion for this work started early. At just 18 years old, she witnessed firsthand how hospice care can transform a difficult moment into something more peaceful.

“I watched a hospice nurse take something that felt really scary and turn it into something peaceful — and honestly, kind of beautiful,” Ashlee recalled. “She took the time to explain what was happening, how the medications worked, and how to care for the patient.”

That experience stayed with her. Years later, when both of her grandfathers received hospice care, it reinforced just how important this support is, not only for patients, but for their families as well.

Today, Ashlee’s “why” is simple but powerful: “Making sure people feel cared for and supported during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.”

Even though she isn’t physically present in the home, she knows her role is essential to the care experience.

“I take a lot of pride in being someone my team can rely on to keep things organized, moving and always centered around the patient,” she said.

That sense of teamwork is something she values deeply. “What stands out most to me about Elara is the team. Even when things get chaotic, there’s always a strong sense of support and teamwork.”

In hospice care, collaboration is everything. The clinical team and support staff work together to ensure patients can remain comfortable at home, surrounded by the people and environment they know best.

Ashlee remembers a patient’s wife who would call frequently, simply needing reassurance as she cared for her husband.

“She just needed someone to talk things through with,” Ashlee said.

Over time, they built a connection. After the patient passed, the woman and her daughters visited the office to thank the team.

“I recognized her voice right away,” Ashlee shared. “She gave me the biggest hug and thanked me for always being there.”

That moment was a powerful reminder that support doesn’t always come in the form of hands-on care. Sometimes, it’s about listening, reassuring and helping someone feel less alone.

Caring Career Spotlight: Bonnie, Branch Director

When it comes to delivering high-quality, compassionate care at home, strong leadership makes all the difference. Bonnie’s journey with ɫɫ��Ƶ is a powerful example of how dedication, growth and a passion for helping others can shape both a career and the patient experience.

Bonnie joined ɫɫ��Ƶ in April 2020, just weeks away from completing her RN training. She began by working one day a week, supporting a small but growing patient population.

After graduating, Bonnie stepped into a full-time field nurse role, quickly becoming an integral part of the team. Her leadership skills and commitment to patient care didn’t go unnoticed. Within months, she advanced to RN Supervisor, and over time, continued to grow into broader leadership roles. Today, she serves as Branch Director for two personal care services teams, while also acting as the Clinical Team Lead for nursing in one Missouri branch.

Her story reflects the kind of career growth that’s possible in home-based care and the impact strong leadership can have on both teams and patients.

At the heart of Bonnie’s work is a deep belief in the value of in-home care.

She shared, “I love working for ɫɫ��Ƶ because what we do allows people to remain at home where they are the happiest.”

That simple idea — helping people stay safe, comfortable and independent at home — is what drives so much of the work across skilled home health, personal care services and beyond.

Bonnie also highlights the importance of the culture behind the care.

“I work in an environment of very supportive peers and upper management,” she explains. “The values that mean the most to me are integrity and teamwork.”

Bonnie said the most meaningful moments often happen one-on-one with patients.

She recalls a time early in her career when she was calling a new patient to welcome him and gather important information for his care. During the call, she noticed something wasn’t right.

“I could hear he was in respiratory distress,” she says.

Bonnie immediately encouraged him to seek emergency care, but he shared that he didn’t have transportation.

Thinking quickly, Bonnie asked him to stay on the phone while emergency services were contacted on his behalf. He was transported to the hospital and received the care he needed.

Later, she learned just how impactful that moment had been. The patient shared that her actions had helped save his life.

Stories like this highlight the critical role that in-home care providers play, not just in ongoing support, but in recognizing urgent needs and acting quickly. It’s about more than scheduled visits. It’s about being present, attentive and ready to respond when it matters.

Great care starts with people who lead with compassion, consistency and a genuine desire to help others. For Lacy, a Field Supervisor for personal care services, that mindset is at the heart of everything she does, from supporting patients and families to guiding her team each day.

Lacy’s journey with ɫɫ��Ƶ began in 2017 when she joined as a personal care aide. In that role, she gained hands-on experience and developed a deep understanding of the impact in-home care can have on someone’s life. After stepping away in 2021, an opportunity to return brought her back in August 2023 as a Care Team Supervisor. Since then, she has continued to grow into her current role as a Field Supervisor, building on her early experiences while expanding her leadership skills.

“My journey has allowed me to grow while staying connected to the foundation I built early in my career,” Lacy shares.

That foundation is rooted in her “why,” a simple but powerful commitment to helping others.

“I love to help people, and I take pride in being someone they can count on,” she says. “In many cases, I may be the only face they see from Elara, so it’s important to me that I represent the company in a way that reflects care, compassion and reliability.”

For Lacy, that responsibility is personal. She understands that every interaction matters, and she approaches each one with intention, making sure patients feel supported, heard and cared for.

“I want our clients to know that I will do everything I can to help them and support them through their care journey,” she says.

Her motivation also comes from the balance this work provides, allowing her to support both her clients and her own family.

“Knowing I can make a difference in someone’s life while also supporting my family keeps me motivated every day,” she shares.

That sense of purpose is reinforced by the people around her. Lacy says the culture at ɫɫ��Ƶ is one of the reasons she loves coming to work.

“I love working here because of the people and the relationships we build every day,” she says. “There’s a genuine sense of care and support, not just for patients, but for each other.”

She values the teamwork that defines her experience, where collaboration and communication help ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.

“The teamwork here really stands out. Everyone works together to make sure patients receive the best care possible,” Lacy explains.

That collaboration is especially important when patients are transitioning into care. Lacy points to moments where coordination between teams makes a meaningful difference.

“We worked closely to support a patient transitioning home from a facility, making sure services were in place without delay,” she says. “Through clear communication and teamwork, we were able to provide a smooth transition and ensure the patient received the care they needed right away.”

While those larger moments are impactful, Lacy says some of the most meaningful parts of her role happen in the very first interaction.

“When I first call a client, it’s more than just scheduling a meeting,” she explains. “It’s the start of building a relationship.”

She takes time to listen, answer questions and walk clients through what to expect, helping ease uncertainty and build trust from the beginning.

“I want them to feel comfortable and supported from that very first conversation,” she says. “Even small interactions can make a big difference in someone’s experience.”

Beyond her day-to-day responsibilities, Lacy also represents ɫɫ��Ƶ out in the community, participating in health fairs, career days and job fairs. These opportunities allow her to connect with others, share information about in-home care and help bring new team members into the organization.

For Lacy, it all comes back to being present for others, whether that’s a patient, a family member or a teammate.

“This work is about showing up for people,” she says. “If I can make someone feel supported, even in a small way, that means everything.”

For Ryan, Area Vice President of Operations for personal care services, that mindset shows up in how he leads his team, supports patients and builds meaningful connections across the organization.

Ryan joined ɫɫ��Ƶ in August 2025, bringing a strong background in long-term care and hospice operations.

“Even just a few months in, I already feel at home,” Ryan shares. “I couldn’t be more pleased with my experience so far, and I’m excited about what’s ahead as we continue to grow and expand into new markets.”

That sense of excitement is rooted in something deeper. Ryan said this work has always been about helping others.

“I was raised in a close, supportive family where kindness was a core value,” he says. “I remember hearing the message to ‘look for the helpers,’ and that has always stayed with me. Healthcare gives us the opportunity to be that helper for someone every single day.”

That perspective shapes how Ryan approaches both leadership and care. He believes that even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact, and he sees that play out regularly across his teams.

One moment that stands out happened around Thanksgiving, when a client was facing a difficult situation after experiencing a major loss. With cold weather setting in and limited resources, the client was going through an especially challenging time.

“Our team continued to check in on him, but what stood out most was how they went above and beyond,” Ryan recalls. “One team member even visited on their own time on Thanksgiving and brought a homemade meal to make sure he didn’t feel alone.”

Ryan said that kind of compassion is what defines ɫɫ��Ƶ.

“You can’t train that level of care. It comes from who people are,” he says. “And I see it every day. It’s what makes me proud to be part of this team.”

That same spirit carries into the culture Ryan experiences at Elara. He credits the organization’s leadership and team environment as key reasons he enjoys coming to work each day.

“I felt a genuine connection with the leaders here right from the start,” he says. “Their passion and excitement made me want to be part of this team. Now, I get to bring that same energy to my own team every day.”

Working closely with the Missouri personal care services team, Ryan has seen how a supportive, positive environment can drive both team success and better patient outcomes.

“It’s a culture of encouragement and shared success,” he says. “I’m constantly telling the team, ‘I’m in a great mood and nothing is going to change that,’ because that energy matters. When people feel supported, it shows in the care they provide.”

Collaboration is another key part of that success. Ryan views delivering great care as a shared responsibility across the entire organization.

“We promote Elara through the care we provide every day. When we show up with compassion and consistency, that’s what builds trust with our clients and families,” he said.

That approach recently made a difference when a state-funded program was unexpectedly discontinued, leaving several clients at risk of losing services. Ryan’s team acted quickly, reaching out to those affected and working to find alternative solutions so care could continue without interruption.

“It was a moment where our team truly stepped up,” he says. “We were able to maintain services and support those clients during a stressful time. That’s what it means to go above and beyond.”

Ryan said it all comes back to purpose: supporting people when they need it most and leading teams that are committed to doing the same.

“This work is about showing up for others,” he says. “Whether it’s a patient, a family member or a teammate, we all have the opportunity to make someone’s day a little easier.”

For Laura, Senior Director of Organizational Effectiveness & Strategy for personal care services, that commitment has shaped her entire career journey.

Laura began her path at ɫɫ��Ƶ in 2016 in Potosi, Missouri. Starting as a Service Coordinator Manager, she worked closely with clients and caregivers to ensure services were scheduled and delivered smoothly. From there, her career continued to grow, moving into a Field Supervisor role, then Branch Director, Regional Branch Director and Director of Operations.

Today, Laura leads strategic initiatives that help strengthen how care is delivered across the organization. Her work focuses on improving processes, supporting teams and ensuring patients receive the right care at the right time.

“I’ve had the opportunity to grow alongside the company,” Laura shares. “With each role, I’ve been able to take on new challenges while continuing to support both our teams and the clients we serve.”

At the heart of Laura’s work is a simple but powerful perspective: every patient is someone’s loved one.

“My ‘why’ has always been rooted in helping those who can’t always help themselves,” she says. “I try to look at every client as someone’s parent or grandparent. I think about how I would want my own family cared for if I couldn’t be there.”

That mindset shows up in the moments that matter most. Laura recalls a recent conversation with a client’s daughter who shared how much peace of mind she felt knowing her father was being well cared for at home.

“That peace of mind for families is everything,” Laura says. “Knowing we can provide that level of support and trust is what continues to motivate me.”

It’s not just patient stories that stand out; it’s also the everyday opportunities to make a difference. At a recent wedding, Laura found herself talking with a couple who felt they couldn’t take a vacation because they didn’t have support in place for a 90-year-old parent.

“You could see the relief on their faces when they realized they had options,” she says. “Being able to help families find that balance—caring for their loved one while still living their own lives—is incredibly meaningful.”

Laura also credits ɫɫ��Ƶ’s culture and leadership as a key part of her experience.

“The leaders here genuinely care about you as a person, not just as an employee,” she says. “They support your growth, your development and your wellbeing. It truly feels like you have people in your corner who want to see you succeed.”

That support extends across teams, especially when it comes to collaboration between service lines. Laura has seen firsthand how strong coordination can lead to better outcomes for patients.

“We work closely across teams to make sure clients are connected to the right level of care at the right time,” she explains. “For example, when a client has a change in condition, we’re able to quickly identify that and bring in additional support, whether that’s skilled home health or hospice, before it becomes something more serious.”

This proactive, connected approach helps patients stay safer at home while giving families greater confidence and support.

For Laura, it all comes back to impact: on patients, on families and on the teams delivering care every day.

“Knowing we can make a difference, even in small ways, is what makes this work so meaningful,” she says.

ɫɫ��Ƶ Branch Director Kindra Wilcox named March Nurse of the Month

Kindra Wilcox has been named Nurse of the Month for March as part of a program sponsored by The Shawnee News-Star and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Wilcox, RN, BSN, MBA, has been a nurse for 18 years, and is currently the ɫɫ��Ƶ Hospice director. A series of life events were a factor leading to her career.

“I never imagined that one day I would become a nurse. For a long time, I simply thought of myself as someone who loved and cared deeply for the people around me. But life has a way of placing you exactly where you’re meant to be, sometimes through moments that are both heartbreaking and profound,” she said.

Wilcox shared a tragic family experience that impacted her life and her decision to become a nurse.

“Several years ago, my nieces were involved in a terrible car accident. It’s still difficult to talk about because that day changed our family forever,” she said. “The accident left several of the girls with significant injuries, and tragically, we lost one sweet girl. I think of her every single day. Her memory stays with me in quiet moments, reminding me how precious and fragile life truly is.”

While the other girls were in the hospital, Wilcox traveled to be with them as often as she could.

“I spent several days by their sides, watching over them, comforting them, and helping however I could. During that time, I also watched the nurses caring for them. I remember being amazed at the compassion and patience they showed. They weren’t just giving medications or checking vital signs—they were offering reassurance, kindness, and strength to scared children and a hurting family,” she said. “One day stands out clearly in my mind. I was helping one of the girls to the restroom when a nurse walked in and asked me, ‘Are you a nurse?’ I told her I wasn’t. But in that exact moment, something inside me clicked. Standing there, helping someone I loved and witnessing the care surrounding us, I realized that was exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to be that person for someone else in their hardest moments.”

Looking back, Wilcox said she thinks the path toward nursing had been quietly forming in her heart long before that day.

“In my later teen years, I helped care for my grandmother while she was on hospice. Those were tender and emotional days, but they were also deeply meaningful. I remember watching her hospice nurse closely. The way she spoke to my grandmother, the gentleness in her hands, and the respect and dignity she showed her during such a vulnerable time left a lasting impression on me,” Wilcox said. “She didn’t just care for my grandmother’s medical needs—she cared for her as a person. She cared for our whole family. There was something so powerful about the peace and comfort she brought into that room.”

All of those experiences had a profound impact on her and a true calling to the nursing profession.

“When I look back now, I realize those experiences shaped my heart for this calling. Losing my niece taught me how precious every moment is. Watching nurses care for my injured nieces showed me the impact compassion can have during crisis. And witnessing the tender care my grandmother received on hospice showed me the beauty of helping someone through the final chapter of life,” Wilcox said. “Those moments didn’t just inspire me—they guided me. They led me to hospice nursing, where I feel I can offer the same compassion, dignity, and comfort that meant so much to my family.”

Wilcox said she became a nurse not just to treat patients, but to be present with people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

“To hold a hand, to listen, to comfort, and to care the way others once cared for the people I love. And every day I do this work, I carry their memories with me,” she said.

Wilcox attended Dale High School and then State State College for her RN, and SWOSU for her BSN and Capella for her MBA in healthcare administration.

Wilcox find many rewards in her position, she said, including, “leading my team and away they’re able to fill the impact of what hospice really means and what they’re doing for each patient.”

In her free time, Wilcox loves coaching softball and basketball. She and her husband have been married for 25 years, and she has three children, two extra nieces and a nephew, along with four grandchildren.
