Rob told us, 鈥淎lthough I technically enlisted in February of 1990, I actually left for basic training on August 2nd, 1990. That’s the same day that Iraq invaded Kuwait kicking off the Persian Gulf War. As an 18-year-old, very sheltered teenager, knowing that I was enlisting into the military while we were gearing up for war was terrifying, but at the same time a situation that taught valuable lessons in personal courage, duty, and loyalty. The war was, fortunately, quite short and pretty much was drawn down by the time I finished training. I ended up going to Germany and spending three years there, but will always remember the motivation to train hard, learn everything I could, and better myself in anticipation of what was coming next. I was planning on spending four years in the military and stopping. I ended up re-enlisting in the Guard/Reserve multiple times and finally went to Warrant Officer Candidate School to reach the top of my field. I retired as the bandmaster/commander of the 204th Army Band in Vancouver, WA.鈥�

His military career helped him in his civilian career in many ways, Rob said. He learned to work with diverse groups of people, demonstrate attention to detail, lead others and care about his workforce.
