The Role of the Physical Therapist in Home Care
What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy is an individualized patient treatment that can help individuals regain mobility, reduce pain and restore independence.
Who benefits from physical therapy in the home?
In the skilled home health care setting, physical therapy can be part of the patient鈥檚 care plan. Most commonly, we treat patients who:
- Had a recent hospitalization or surgery
- Need orthopedic rehab after hip, knee or spinal surgery
- Received a new diagnosis such as COPD, stroke or diabetes
- Experience frequent falls
- Have swallowing issues
- Suffer from incontinence
What do in-home physical therapists do?
Physical therapists are licensed healthcare professionals trained to evaluate, assess and treat limitations in functional mobility, such as those caused by illness or injury.
By using different techniques and therapeutic exercises, physical therapists can help patients gain strength, increase range of motion and improve physical function. They work with patients to set specific goals and then tailor their treatment plans to meet those milestones in the patient鈥檚 preferred home setting.
