Life Story Boards: A Tool for Connection and Compassion

Hospice volunteers play a vital role at the end of a patient’s life by offering presence, compassion and human connection during a deeply meaningful time. Through life review, listening as patients reflect on their memories, relationships and accomplishments, volunteers help individuals find dignity, closure and a sense of meaning in their lived experiences. This attentive listening affirms the patient’s identity beyond illness, reminding them that their story matters. For many patients, sharing their life narrative eases emotional distress, fosters peace and supports acceptance as life draws to a close. Hospice volunteers create a safe space where patients feel seen and heard, making the final chapter of life less lonely and more grounded in compassion.

Every patient has a story, a rich, beautiful history, that is meaningful and helps us care for them more fully. Lisa, Social Worker and Volunteer Coordinator in Newburyport, MA, has found a creative and compassionate way for patients with dementia to have their stories told. She works with her volunteers and the patients’ families to create “My Life” storyboards using information about the patients’ favorite things and events in their lives. Families share photographs and personal details, which volunteers lovingly transform into colorful storyboards. Hung in the patient’s room, these boards invite connection, helping caregivers, visitors and staff to see the person more fully. They spark conversation, recognition and moments of joy.

For individuals with dementia, recalling a lifetime of memories can be profoundly difficult. “My Life” storyboards help bridge the gap, gently telling the story when words cannot. Dianna, volunteer in Newburyport, explains, “The storyboard helps bring to life each person’s individual experience. I like to help make those connections for those no longer able to do so themselves.”

A Lifetime of Service

Veteran volunteer Gary brings warmth, joy and an unwavering dedication to service everywhere he goes. His journey with ɫɫ��Ƶ began after we had the privilege of caring for his beloved wife. As our Texas Area Director of Operations, Sarah, shared, the compassion Gary witnessed during her care deeply influenced his desire to give back. In the midst of grief, he sought purpose—something meaningful that would allow him to support others the way others had supported him.

When Gary first visited our San Antonio office, Volunteer Coordinator Misty immediately felt the strength of his spirit. He spoke candidly about the loss of his wife and how, despite the love of his children and church family, he still carried a quiet emptiness in his heart that longed to serve. Yet even through sadness, Gary radiates joy. A social butterfly, he thrives on connection, laughter and lifting the spirits of those around him. His smile reflects exactly who he is, and his continued service inspires us all.

A U.S. Army veteran who served from 1959 to 1988, Gary continues to live out his legacy of service. Though he stays active—bowling in three leagues and golfing weekly—he was looking for something deeper. During his volunteer intake, he immediately connected with ɫɫ��Ƶ’s core values of respect and compassion. He also shared the guiding words he lives by: “No one can help everyone, but everyone can help someone.”

Gary brings that belief to life with every visit, every conversation and every act of kindness.

His presence brings comfort, his laughter lifts hearts and his dedication strengthens our mission. He connects with fellow veterans with profound empathy—listening to their stories, encouraging them and helping them feel seen and valued. His commitment reaches beyond his volunteer assignments, too. He even invited Sarah and Misty to speak at his upcoming Veteran Breakfast to introduce two friends who may benefit from ɫɫ��Ƶ’s support.

Gary is a veteran who never stopped serving. He continues to give, uplift and shine his light into the lives of others. We are honored to have him as part of the ɫɫ��Ƶ team and grateful for the lasting impact he makes throughout our community.

A Veteran Volunteer Makes a Meaningful Impact

At ɫɫ��Ƶ, our volunteers offer more than their time — they bring heart, experience and a commitment to caring for others. Among these remarkable individuals is Lori, a U.S. Army veteran, mother and local barber whose compassion has made a lasting difference for the patients she serves.

For Lori, volunteering is more than a commitment — it’s a calling. She uses her skills to create meaningful moments of connection and dignity. What may look like a simple haircut often becomes a powerful act of care. On Veterans Day morning, Lori traveled an hour each way to provide a haircut and shave to an Air Force veteran who had not left his home in more than three years, making her visit profoundly significant.

Reflecting on her experience, Lori shared that volunteering as a barber with ɫɫ��Ƶ has been one of the most meaningful experiences of her life. “As a veteran myself, I understand what simple acts of care and connection can mean, especially to those who have served our country or who may feel isolated. Providing haircuts is more than just grooming; it’s a chance to restore dignity, spark conversation and bring a sense of normalcy and comfort to someone’s day,” she said.

Misty A., Volunteer Coordinator, shares that Lori’s impact extends far beyond the barber chair. With 17 years of U.S. Army service, two children and her own barber shop, Lori brings a rare blend of discipline, warmth and generosity to her hospice volunteer work. Misty adds, “Lori reminds us that compassion can be hands-on, and that service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off; it simply takes on new meaning.”

Lori’s story is a powerful reminder that service doesn’t end when military duty does. We are deeply grateful for veteran volunteers like Lori who continue to serve others through the gift of volunteering.

Students Partner with ɫɫ��Ƶ to Honor Veterans

In recognition of Veterans Day, elementary students in Jackson, Michigan, teamed up with ɫɫ��Ƶ to bring heartfelt appreciation to local veterans through the Game Changers program — an initiative that encourages kindness and community involvement among young learners.

This special collaboration was sparked by Liz W., director of ancillary services at ɫɫ��Ƶ. When Liz received a message from her children’s school about its Veterans Day card project, she immediately saw an opportunity to connect the students’ efforts with ɫɫ��Ƶ’s veteran patients and volunteers.

“When the message from my kids’ school went out asking if we knew any veterans for cards they were making for Veterans Day, I knew we had some patients and volunteers who would love to receive them. The students made pictures and cards for all branches of the armed services. It was amazing to see their creations.”

To bring the idea to life, Liz partnered with Evie B., Elara volunteer program coordinator, who coordinated with Tanya R., the Game Changers lead mentor. Together, they ensured the students’ thoughtful cards and artwork reached ɫɫ��Ƶ’s veteran patients and volunteers, offering moments of joy and gratitude for their service.

This project reflects the impact of teamwork, creativity and community engagement — values that continue to guide ɫɫ��Ƶ’s work across the communities we serve. Thank you to Liz, Evie and the students and staff of the Game Changers program for making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have served our nation.

Meet Zoey, Therapy Dog Providing Comfort to Hospice Patients

Care goes beyond medical attention—it’s about comfort, companionship and meaningful connection. Therapy dogs bring all of these—and more—to patients and their families. Through visits with volunteers and therapy dogs, patients can experience moments of companionship and happiness that lift spirits and create meaningful connections.

Meet Zoey, Ohio therapy dog, who “shared” a story about her first visit as a volunteer with ɫɫ��Ƶ.

Hi, I’m Zoey!

What an exciting day I had on my very first visit in Mentor, Ohio. I got to go with my mom, Charlene B. (Volunteer), and my new friend, Paula D. (Volunteer Coordinator). Everyone was so happy to see me — they even made a poster to announce my visit. I felt like a star!

I wagged my way around the room to meet each resident. Their smiles and gentle pets made me feel so special. Later, I got to visit patients in their rooms and homes. One patient lying in bed wanted me close, so I carefully put my paws on the side of her bed, so she could reach me. Another patient’s daughter hugged me and told me all about the dogs she had growing up. Together, we shared smiles, stories and lots of love.

By the time I got home, I was so tired I took a very long nap — but I knew in my heart that I want to go back again soon.

Therapy dogs like me may have four paws and a wagging tail, but what we bring to hospice is simple: comfort, joy and connection. And sometimes, that’s the best medicine of all.

What Do Hospice Volunteers Do?

Volunteering for hospice can be a very rewarding experience. Hospice volunteers share their talents and time with hospice organizations in a variety of ways.

What is hospice?

Hospice is a benefit for people facing life-limiting illness. The hospice team provides compassionate, comprehensive care focusing on personal goals and optimizing quality of life.

Why does hospice need volunteers?

Volunteers are so important to the hospice mission that the Medicare Conditions of Participation require hospice organizations to have volunteers to provide additional care and services to patients. Volunteers bring unique experiences, knowledge and skills that enhance the in-home hospice experience and support patients and their families.

What types of activities do hospice volunteers do?

ɫɫ��Ƶ hospice volunteers work with us in many different capacities.

Direct care volunteers visit patients wherever they call home. They can:

Spend time and just be present.
Read or play soothing music.
Play games.
Write legacy letters with the patient.
Prepare meals.
Do light housekeeping.
Provide respite so caregivers can take a break.
Offer pet therapy (with a certified pet therapy animal).
Use their special skills, such as painting nails, giving a haircut or creating art.

Indirect patient volunteers donate their time and

Attend community health fairs.
Make gifts for patients, like cards.
Bake or prepare snacks/meals to send to patients.

Bereavement volunteers work with our bereavement coordinators to support families after the death of their loved one. They:

Assist with support groups.
Call or follow up with families.
Help with annual remembrance events.

Administrative volunteers work with our clinical operations team on activities like:

Data entry.
Mailings.
Assembling patient information packets.
General clerical work.

How much time do I have to volunteer with hospice?

You can volunteer at ɫɫ��Ƶ as much or as little as you want. Our volunteer coordinators will work with you on schedule that fits your needs.

“I had been looking for volunteer opportunities for several months throughout 2021. I am retired and wanted to do something that was helpful to others. By the end of the year, I saw an opportunity that sounded very inviting; it entailed sewing Memory Bears for families of hospice patients. I certainly did not know anything about this venture and had so many questions filtering through my head, but I wanted more information. The family of a patient offers clothing from the patient, perhaps a few special shirts or blouses. Once I get the clothing pieces, I can make the bears from a pattern. Making a Memory Bear is so meaningful to the families who have lost their loved one. It’s a special gift to remind them of someone that made a difference in their lives and is like offering them a ‘hug’ of good memories. I really enjoy volunteering at Elara because I can do it in my own time, and it is something to do at home.”
