Weathering the Winter: Hints for Health to Stay Safe and Well

Winter can be filled with challenges and hazards, particularly for individuals with chronic illnesses, the elderly or those recovering from illness or hospitalization. Stay safe and healthy this winter with these essential Hints for Health.

Winterize Your Wardrobe

  • Choose shoes or boots that fit well, keep your feet warm and have good traction. This can prevent slips and falls on icy surfaces.
  • Wear multiple layers to adjust to changing temperatures. Don鈥檛 forget winter must-haves like hats, gloves, and scarves to protect against the cold.

Keep Your Feet on the Ground

Walking in winter conditions can be tricky, but you can stay on your feet if you:

  • Use handrails whenever available.
  • Wear proper footwear designed for snow and ice.
  • Walk at a slow, careful pace, taking short steps to maintain balance.
  • Maintain a center of balance (think 鈥渨alk like a penguin鈥).
  • Avoid distractions like texting or talking on your phone while walking.
  • Stick to cleared pathways for safety.

Plan for the Unexpected

  • Check forecasts to avoid being outdoors during severe weather.
  • Ensure smoke alarms are functional and keep batteries fresh.
  • Have a flashlight handy in case of power outages.

Stock Up Your Cupboards

Winter weather can lead to impassable roads or electricity disruptions. Be prepared by keeping a stock of health supplies and non-perishable food items, such as:

  • Medicine
  • Bottled water
  • Dried fruits and nuts
  • Peanut butter
  • Granola or protein bars
  • Canned goods and soups

Shovel Safely

Shoveling snow is physically demanding and can lead to overexertion or even heart attacks. Follow these guidelines:

  • Use a small shovel to make loads lighter and easier to manage.
  • Don鈥檛 work to the point of exhaustion; take frequent breaks.
  • Ask for help if the task feels overwhelming.
  • Lift with your legs, not your back, to avoid strain.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the process.
  • Stop and call 911 immediately if you experience heart attack symptoms like:
    • Chest pain or discomfort
    • Lightheadedness, nausea or vomiting
    • Jaw, neck or back pain
    • Discomfort or pain in your arms or shoulders
    • Shortness of breath

Recognize Signs of Hypothermia

Hypothermia can be life-threatening. Watch for:

  • Confusion
  • Shivering
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Sleepiness
  • Stiff muscles

If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, move to a warm space immediately and call 911 if symptoms persist.

Prevent Seasonal Illness

Stave off sickness by following these precautions:

  • Vaccinations for flu and COVID-19 can help prevent or reduce the severity of illness.
  • Frequent handwashing reduces the spread of germs.
  • Cough into your elbow to keep germs off your hands.
  • Get plenty of sleep and fresh air, and eat balanced meals.
  • Don鈥檛 ignore signs of worsening illness, such as fever, chills, severe coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain or muscle aches. Visit your doctor promptly to avoid complications.
